KW’s Newest!

Resident MG Design Idol, Kelly Wearstler, has launched an e-commerce website, and let me tell you, it definitely got my blood flowing this morning! I was not surprised that I loved so, so many things (that blazer is probably my favorite), but I was really pleasantly surprised that there were tons of items under $500, and a good amount even under $200. Blessed By Beans

Beans are simply the best vegetable in the garden. I know, all you people out there who hate eating your greens disagree, but really when you compare factors like the ease of growing, pests, and diseases beans really win out.  In many cases beans will just continue to grow when other plants halt in the tracks due to dry weather conditions like we’re experiencing now. While the tomato production is shutting down (hopefully that is just temporary) the beans are putting on flowers and pods in complete defiance of the weather.

I’ve planted a few types of beans in the garden this year.

What to do when plants bolt

If you grow vegetables, herbs or flowers, at some point you have probably experienced what happens when your plants “bolt.”   Bolting is defined as “ when plants grow quickly, stop flowering  and  set seeds.”  This term is commonly applied to crops like Lettuce and Spinach but can happen with your flowers too.   Weather can play a factor in bolting.  At the end of the spring when temperatures are consistently rising and then are hot in summer, it’s the natural course of events for cool season crops to quit putting energy into producing foliage and realize that they better produce seed if they want to keep the species going.
