When searching for kids room ideas, bunk beds offer numerous benefits. If you find a set that simply doesn’t coordinate with your décor, one option is to paint the set. With paint colors and combinations, the customization options are nearly endless. The key is knowing how to go about prepping and painting the type of bunk beds you have.
Bunk beds are typically made of either wood or metal. Although the steps you should take to paint each of these varies, for best results you should disassemble the beds as completely as possible before painting. Doing so will provide better coverage and a more professional looking result. If you are unfamiliar with furniture assembly, taking notes and photographs while you take the beds apart will help you put it back together more easily.

If you are painting wooden bunk beds, begin by sanding off the current paint, stain or lacquer as thoroughly as possible. Clean the sanded surfaces using a vacuum attachment, dry brush or cloth to remove any sawdust, paint shavings or sand that remains. Paint each piece, allow it to dry completely and then apply a second coat of paint. Let the bunk beds dry overnight or longer, making sure that they are entirely dry and not tacky or moist before putting the pieces back together.
Metal bunk beds need to be sanded as well, even if they were not previously painted. Doing so will help the paint better adhere to the surface. Using a circular motion, sand until any paint is gone and the metal is no longer shiny. Clean off the shavings and sand by wiping the pieces with a damp cloth followed by a dry one. Spray on a coat of primer or rust sealant in an even layer, covering all of the metal. When the primer dries, apply one to two coats of spray paint or oil-based paint, allowing the first coat to dry before painting on the second. Finish with a clear coat to seal the paint and protect it from chips or dings. Make sure the paint has dried completely before you put the bunk beds back together.
You can further embellish any type of twin bunkbeds by stenciling on a unique design or applying vinyl decals. Choose color combinations and designs that appeal to both you and your children for a kids’ bedroom your family will enjoy for years to come.
